What is a Hogan assessment?
Hogan assessment is a complex personality examination used by employers in their hiring process. These tests are hard because you have no idea what the right or wrong answers are and what qualities the employer is looking for in this test. This test is usually deployed for testing people applying to mid to high-level managerial jobs.
Hogan uses the iceberg analogy to explain what they assess. The tip of the iceberg is visible to all. Businesses can see what you do and how you achieve those results, but they do not readily know why you do these things. Which tests are included in the Hogan assessment?
Hogan test either assesses your thinking abilities or hidden personality. These two are essential to employers as it predicts your strength, values, work-style, and weaknesses. The tests included in the Hogan assessments are:
Hogan Personality Inventory (HPI):
this consists of 220 questions to be answered in forty minutes. It assesses how well you relate to others on your good days. It focuses on evaluating your bright-side or normal behavior.
Hogan Development Survey (HDS):
this is the direct opposite of HPI. It focuses on your dark-side—those characters that lurk deep within and how you react under stress. This test has 170 questions to be answered in twenty minutes.
Hogan Motives, Values, Preferences Inventory (MVPI):
this assesses your interests, core goals, values, and what motivates you to succeed. It is a test of your inner personality. This test has 200 questions and takes approximately 20 minutes to complete it.
Hogan Business Reasoning Inventory (HBRI):
this evaluates the tactical and strategic reasoning skills of employees using numerical, verbal, logical, and abstract reasoning test. This test has 24 questions with no time limit.
This assessment combines all other Hogan assessments. It is a comprehensive test of personality and cognitive abilities.
How are the Hogan tests scored?
The Hogan test is scored using percentile and normative systems. Your test results are dependent on the performance of other test-takers. Your result is compared to those of other participants. Your performance is ranked in relation to the scores of other applicants.
How to prepare for a Hogan test?
- Learn the characteristics needed to excel in the position you applied for: Hogan test assesses if your character fits that required by the job. Find out as much as you can about the role and job description. Ask questions from present employees.
